Botonical garden:On the west bank of Hooghly, south of Howrah, are extensive botonical gardens Prime attraction in the garden is the 200year old Banyan tree, claimed to be the largest in the world.The Gardens are at Sibpur and can be reached by crossing the bridge, 19km from Chowringhee. The Gardens are openfrom sunrise to sun set.

4. Science City :It is located on Kolkata's Eastern Metropolitan Bypass. This 21st century marvel of science, communication and environment is the first and only institution of its kind in India.The pioneering effort of NCSM. Here one finds science out of doors and alive.

5. Fort William :The Fort William stands solemnly on the Western bank of The Hoogly. It stretches from the Western flank of the Red Road The Battle of Plassey ended in June, 1757. Robert Clive was deeply worried about the British destiny and what lay in store for Calcutta because the erstwhile fragile fort was easily captured by Siraj-ud-daula. Consequently, Clive decided to build a formidable fort to resist enemy onslaughts effectively.

The Sunderbans are world famous for Royal Bengal Tigers which are also notorious as man-eaters. These forests, providing home to the largest number of tigers in the world, are also home to a variety of fauna including the largest deltaic crocodiles, dolphins, the king cobra, lizards, pythons, olive ridley,checkered killback, gangetic gharial (alligator), giant turtle and deer; and a variety of resident and migratory birds including heron, egret, cormorant,tishing eagle, seagull, kingfisher, whim brei, black-tailed godwit, little stint, eastern knot, curlew, sandpiper,golden plover, pintail and whistling teal.


Among the places which a tourist must visit are the Project Tiger, Sudhanyakhali, Netidhopani, Lothian Island Bird Sanctuary, Mayadwip and Kalasdwip, Bhagatpur Crocodile Project, Piyali, Kaikhali, Buridabari and Dobanki. Declared as a Biosphere Reserve as well as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997

Sundarbans is home to many different species of birds, mammals, insects, reptiles and fishes. Over 120 species of fish and over 260 species of birds have been recorded in the Sundarbans. The Gangetic River Dolphin (Platanista gangeticus) is common in the rivers. No less than 50 species of reptiles and eight species of amphibians are known to occur. The Sundarbans now support the only population of the Estuarine, or Salt-Water Crocodile (Crocodylus parasus) in West Bangal , and that population is estimated at less than two hundred individuals.
